Changing life quality through nutrition

SNE is a European association representing
the views of its members, who are the dietetic
food industry associations of the EU Member States.

About Us

Specialised Nutrition Europe (SNE) is the trade association representing the interests of the specialised nutrition industry across the European Union.

Our members are the national associations of 18 EU Member States and their members are the companies producing foods for particular nutritional needs, known at EU level as 'foods for specific groups'. These companies range from SMEs to internationally operating companies.

The association represents an annual turnover of approaching €24bn, around 5% of which is invested in research (in comparison, the general foods industry invests an average of 0,53% of its turnover in R&D (2009 data (Eurostat, UN COMTRADE, OECD)).

SNE members provide tailor made dietary solutions for populations with very specific nutritional needs including infants and young children, individuals under medical supervision, sportsmen, overweight and obese consumers, and those suffering from coeliac disease.  Estimates show that some 90% of Europeans will need specialised nutrition at some stage in their lives.

The association, formerly known as IDACE, was founded 50 years ago and was originally based in Paris, but moved to Brussels in 2010 to be closer to the European institutions and the EU decision-making process. The Secretariat has permanent staff in Brussels, but being member-ship driven works with Working Groups and Task Forces around themes related to specialised nutrition. (for more information on our working groups, see “Secretariat”).

The association is registered in the EU Transparency register and as such, interacts with the European institutions in full transparency.

In October 2013 the association changed its name to Specialised Nutrition Europe SNE, in order to better reflect the new modernised legislative landscape following the revision of the PARNUTS Framework Directive 2009/39/EC.  (For more information on this review process and our other legislative priorities, please see 'Our priorities’)
